How to Pay for an Online Education

Another common reason that high school students report as the reason why they do not plan on attending college is the cost. This is not at all surprising given that the cost of college education over the last ten years has outpaced inflation, becoming more expensive than even cost of living increases can allow for. Fortunately there are options that will help any qualified student pursue a higher education. Most people, who take the time to look into these various options will find one that is well suited to their financial situation and enable them to afford the expense of an online education.

Scholarships and Grants

Too many people believe that scholarships are only for the young, fresh out of high school, or the basketball star or straight-A student. Nothing could be further from the truth, as there are many thousands of different scholarships available to students in the United States, and not all of them are academic or sports-ability based. Scholarships are usually backed by corporations, foundations, governments or individuals, and the requirements for scholarships varies greatly. Some scholarships are only available to African Americans, some are available only to women, while others are given to people who live in a specific area or region. Scholarships are awarded based on a particular reason and while some may have intense competition from across the country, other scholarships that offer less money or are less well-known, may have very few competitors.

Grants, like scholarships are free money that generally does not have to be repaid by the student. Unlike scholarships, however, grants are rarely given for academic merit, so much as based on proven financial need. How much is available in grant money depends on the school and its location. Students who have the greatest financial need usually receive priority in grant disbursement, and the money is given out based on need entirely from there on up. In many schools it is possible to pay for tuition and books based on grants alone. Those students who are suffering financial hardship, or do not make a lot of money can usually find themselves needing an external source of income only to pay for their living expenses.

Government-Backed Financial Aid

If you are interested in turning to government assistance for your Maryland online education the option exists to receive deferred loans so long as you meet income requirements. Unlike traditional loans, however, government financial aid is not offered to students based on high income or credit, but rather to those students who have low-income. This, combined with the grants for school, can provide the low-income student with no excuse for not pursuing a higher education. Though government financial aid must be repaid once the student graduates or drops below part-time attendance, the interest rates on the loan are generally very low and easily manageable, with various options for assisting with repayment including extending the life of the loan, or even having part of the loan forgiven based on the type of work and service performed after graduation.

Private Financial Aid

Private financial aid comes from various banks and other private lenders across the country and is usually deferred just as the government-backed financial aid is. Unlike the government financial aid, however, which does not check credit and requires a low income in order to receive the best loans, private financial aid is best though t of as a traditional, conventional loan, meaning that a good credit score and high income are helpful in convincing a lender to give you one.

Employer Assistance

If you are an adult with a job already, your employer may offer assistance for continuing education in the form of tuition or books reimbursement. There are usually specific requirements in order to receive this assistance, such as that you must be taking classes relevant to your current job or a job you wish to advance to. You also may be required to agree to pay back the money if you leave the company within a certain period of time after receiving it. Speak with your human resources department for more information on employer assistance programs and what the requirements are.
